Phonics/Spellings:

In River Class, we have a blend of students with a range of learning needs. Therefore some students are continuing to learn phonics and develop their decoding skills. Others are secure in their decoding, and are focused on both spelling and enhancing their comprehension skills.

Phonics sessions are taught in short, daily sessions which take place each morning, typically on a 1-1 or small group basis. Phonics sessions are targeted to meet all individuals where they are at, and are informed by our half-termly phonics assessments.

Comprehension sessions are where we support the students to develop their vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and summary skills.

Our spellings sessions incorporate aspects of the Read Write Inc spelling scheme, along with a multi-sensory approach to teaching the Year 2, and Year 3/4 spelling words.

English

In addition to daily phonics sessions, the children take part in daily handwriting sessions. These sessions follow the principles of 'I do, We do, You do', with adult modelling, regular practice and in the moment feedback. There is also a focus on ensuring the correct posture, positioning and pencil grip to ensure a comfortable and efficient writing process. Through these handwriting sessions, we aim for the students to produce clear, legible handwriting, with letter formed to the correct height, direction and sizing, so that the process becomes automatic. This supports the children to then focus on their ideas and creativity, removing the barrier of handwriting.

In addition, we support the children to learn a range of literacy skills through high-quality texts. Throughout Autumn 2, our English text will be The Dark by Lemony Snicket. This book will be used as a stimulus for discussions and writing.

Maths

River Class are following the Year 4 White Rose scheme of learning. Across the course of Autumn 2, River Class we will be exploring the following concepts:

- Addition (up to two four-digit numbers with multiple exchanges).

- Subtraction (up to two four-digit numbers with multiple exchanges).

- Estimating an answer and using efficient methods to check.

- Area.

In addition to this, we will continue to develop our times tables and basic number skills, which will support our learning of wider maths concepts.

In River Class, we teach PSHE once a week. During Autumn 2, we will be focusing on:

Oral hygiene
Personal hygiene
Eating healthy and staying physically active
Hazards and dangers
Understanding the difference between legal and illegal drugs

In addition, we will be exploring water safety in conjunction with our swimming visits, stressing the importance of being safe around water at all times and having awareness of the potential dangers.
